The Kessler Syndrome.
Low Earth orbit collisions. The risks to Earth and mankind. Humanity made a mess of the Earth so, let’s create more junk in space too!
Before looking into exactly what the Kessler syndrome is, let’s first take a look back at a horrific event which occurred in humanity’s search to reach the stars.
“In that accident, we not only lost seven colleagues, we lost seven friends, … They believed in space exploration. They knew the risks, but they believed in what they were doing. They showed us that the fire of the human spirit is
insatiable.”Charles Camarda. Courtesy of CBS News (4th August 2005)
This was both a time of extreme sadness and a very dark moment for the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) colleagues, families & friends and indeed, the world’s onlookers, of the astronauts who perished during the ill-fated mission on that day of 28th January 1986.
