Who can remember walking into a local cafe, restaurant, or shop back in the days before the internet became a regular household name? When right there in pride of place, and in plain view, was that tip jar.

I certainly remember them. They were typically for anybody shopping in that store, or simply whiling the time away relaxing in a café.

Leaving tips for people, particularly in a country such as the United Kingdom (UK) has for many years met with the rather old-fashioned British ‘stiff upper lip’ attitude

That expression, “stiff upper lip” is explained in greatbritishmag.co.uk as “… the emotionally stunted way in which Brits suppress their true upset, anger or hurt in times of crisis. We supposedly keep a national stiff upper lip during wars and other countrywide catastrophes, and on a personal level whenever things are not going well. Anything from a death to a job loss to divorce (or equally something as trivial as a bad haircut) could trigger a Brit to grab those negative feelings and swallow them down.”
