Definitely, take a look at the bots that were on medium creating false follower lists for loads of us on here. One of the large pubs saw a drop of over 1k followers - because they were bots and not real people.

However, you need to establish a good relationship with people to grow a decent list of genuine followers. And only a real person can do that - no bot could ever in my opinion.
