After 32 years working in psychiatry, don’t even get me started on what the authorities negatively interpret and actively handle. It is the authorities mindset that all too often causes a spiralling downward action in the behaviour patterns of those victims- choosing to accuse them of troublemakers and lawbreakers, rather than choosing to investigate why they have turned to these self-soothe behaviours that are simply frowned upon and treated as criminals - if only they could look deeper into those initial causes where it all began. As an example , if authorities had seen and acted appropriately on the infant head-banging, it could all have been a better outcome.
